Nothing says “I’m a writer” like official merchandise, right?
With that, I am now the proud owner of my very own NaNoWriMo T-shirt. It’s gorgeously soft and huggable, and will surely mark me as a word nerd to any and all comers.
I’m glad it only came half-way through the month. That way, I’m not tempted to wear it *every* day of writing…
Only 500 words away from the half-way point, and my novel is twisting in an unexpected direction. Which makes it high distraction time. Do I dare and take the book off its intended track?
With my last book, I had a similar decision to face, and I didn’t go for it. it’s a point of regret for me, and a convenient nail on which to hang my failure with it. Which is not fair to the book it’s become or the story hook, really.
Watch this space to see which side of the fence I’ll fall on, or if I’ll play “What if” with myself for another two weeks.
So, how’s your NaNo?
It’s that time of the year again. NaNoWriMo, aka National Novel Writing Month, a month-long insanity for novice and experienced writers alike where each writer competes against themselves (and each other, if they’re that way inclined) to write a whopping 50,000 words in just one month. 50,000 words of their novel, that is. blogs and Twitter and emails to your besties don’t count.
This year, I’m joined by a long-time friend, first-time novelist on his first ever book idea. Will he make it to the end? I don’t know, but I hope he does.
It’s not about being a writer. it’s not about finishing the book. It’s about giving it a go and see where it takes you. I think it’s great that he’s doing it, and it’s inspired me to give it a go again as well.
I haven’t been writing as much as I should, and up until yesterday, I was still tossing up whether to write The Big Book for NaNo, or write another one, which I affectionately call the Small Snow Book.
I’ve picked the small one in the end, because I’m a scaredy-cat, and because I need to just write. The big Book involves a lot of research to distract me, and some complex story elements that I haven’t hammered out yet.
I have no idea what the little book is about. I have barely anything beyond the heroine and where she is. We’ll see what kind of book it turns out to be.
